LE HAUT MEDOC DE PEDESCLAUXRating: 90
Chateau Pedesclaux is a prestigious 5th growth chateau in the Pauillac appellation of Medoc. The domaine's vineyards are planted to Merlot (48%), Cabernet Sauvignon (47%) Petit Verdot (3%) and Cabernet Franc (2%). The soil is composed of gravel with clay and limestone with stones. The vines are tended to following the method of â lutte raisonnéeâ, where minimal intervention takes precedent over sprays which are only used when absolutely necessary. Stainless steel temperature controlled vats along with traditional wooden barrels are used to craft the wines. The Haut Médoc de Pédesclaux is one of three wines made by the 5th Growth Chateau Pedesclaux. 2 hectares of vines are dedicated to this wine that is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc. Black currant fruit and cedar jump from the glass of this medium to full-bodied, ripe, well-made wine, which displays some subtle oak as well as excellent ripeness, texture and length. âAnother great vintage in Bordeaux. The fact that 2010 follows the superb 2009 vintage is remarkable. I have tasted enough wines from 2005, 2009 and 2010 to realize that these may be the three greatest Bordeaux vintages I have tasted in my career. While massive and highly extracted, the 2010s are also fresh and incredibly pure. Moreover, they will enjoy astonishing longevity. There are many, many good values and great wines to be found at far lower prices.â - Robert Parker Given our experience with Bordeaux wines over the past 43 years, we find this old saying to be true: âIn great years buy the lesser wines and in off years buy the top wines.â As we have recommended in the past, in years like 2010, Bordeaux lovers should focus on the lesser known wines of this great vintage.
